LG Chem adds Chinese Great Wall Motors Plug-In Hybrids clients the battery.
manufacturer of the South Korean LG Chem battery continues to be on a roll, signing left and right manufacturers who plan to use their cell lithium-ion battery in the new electric cars.
The latest to join the list includes Audi, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, Renault, Smart, Volkswagen and Volvo is Chinese automaker known as Great Wall Motors.
As reported May 17 in The Korea Herald via ChargedEVs, Great Wall has signed a contract with LG Chem to supply battery cells lithium-ion battery for future plug-in hybrid SUV.
The production of these models is expected to begin in 2017.
Due to a shortage of public charging stations and the number of wealthy Chinese drivers living in highrise, PHEVs should be the most popular type of electric vehicles in China.
They qualify as so-called new energy vehicles, which get a variety of city, state and national incentives from various levels of government, although there is no guarantee they will be connected.
Nontheless, almost all Chinese manufacturers - domestic or foreign - should offer a plug-in hybrid vehicles or more in the coming years.
Many of them will be compact crossover utility vehicles, vehicle format increasingly popular in China, just as it is in North America.
Great Wall is the largest single manufacturer of different sized SUV from China, and in 2012 it was the seventh largest national car manufacturer in the country.
Now, over 30 years, Great Wall built as light commercial vehicles until 2010, when it introduced its first sedan.
But it is much better known in China for its various utility crossovers and SUVs, some of which will be offered with plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The company also offers its vehicles in Europe, where they can be sold duty-free because of a factory in Bulgaria that assembles vehicles shipped from China in kit form.
For followers of the automotive industry, however, the Great Wall is also known for its picturesque model names, which include English Cool Bear Hover, Wingle and Peri.
