Proton and Chinese automaker Hawtai Motor Group Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding today to study collaboration in product development in order to expand the presence of protons in the Chinese market.
The MoU was signed by Proton Group MD Datuk Seri Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir and Executive Chairman of Hawtai, Hou Haijing in Nanning, China, evidenced by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Trade Minister International and Industry, Datuk Mustapha Mohamed.
Under the MoU, Proton and Hawtai assess the possible creation of a JV Co joint venture in China to invest in the development of new products in common, including design costs and sharing the joint development both companies will spend the next three months to finalize their study of the business case.
Proton said Hawtai are looking to manufacture the Proton Exora MPV and the next P3-21A Proton sedan in China, which by the way is set to debut in early 2012, the two companies will explore the development of new models together later stage.
The joint venture will be responsible for the supply of components suppliers and development with local Chinese suppliers This should allow Proton to tap into cheap suppliers in China and explore the potential of cross components providing Malaysian suppliers in China vice versa.
Hawtai based in Beijing, currently has the capacity to about 200,000 vehicles, 300,000 engines and 300,000 automatic transmissions a year Hawtai also has a joint venture with South Korea's Hyundai Motors to manufacture the Chinese market versions of the Hyundai Matrix , Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Terracan.
