Neri&Hu turns Beijing's missile factory car workshop
Shanghai studio Neri Hu has converted an old Beijing missile factory in a car repair garage and offices with a metal staircase industrial style, wire cages and painted brick.
Inside the garage, mechanical workshop at the Beijing restoration of some 7 million vehicles is flanked by offices and a café.
Neri Hu wanted to preserve as much of the original building as possible while creating a new interior that shows the allure and magic once associated with the automotive industry.
To do this, Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu architects juxtapose an industrial palette of ironwork and gray paint with walnut refined and brushed bronze elements that recall the craftsmanship of old cars.
Their aim was to challenge the vulgar type of car garage, to inject a sense of warmth in an industrial context, and to portray the seductive side of the ubiquitous modern machine.
Three existing buildings gray brick walls remain intact, while a new black steel structure exposed stretches the building on the west side to create a new floor.
Here, offices, a coffee and a car elevator are placed in separate steel mesh and modular boxes intended to refer to industrial storage facilities A new staircase with black metal panels connects the three stages of the volume.

A series of black metal frames on the outside of the building mark rhythmic window openings, while the mirror glass plot provides texture to the base essentially monochromatic.
